How do motion sensors work?

Putting door and window  sensors on every access point in your smart home is time consuming and not entirely practical. Motion detectors or sensors, are electrical devices that are designed to use a sensor to detect motion or movement in nearby areas and alerts the owner of the property to the intrusion. They are primarily used in private home security systems as well as business security systems. When looking for the right sensor for your home or business, it is important to note the three types that are available. There are passive motion sensors , active motion sensors and multi-technology motion sensors

What are the benefits of motion detectors?

As with all smart technology  today, they are designed to  save you time, money and are really easy to use. Motion sensors are no different. They are highly customizable as they can be used to activate a variety of things such as activating lights surrounding your property and triggering audible alarm systems. Improved home safety is never a bad idea and with motion sensors that trigger floodlights, criminals are easily deterred. No need to stress about intrusions when you’re not home. We all want to save money don’t we? With motion activated exterior lighting, you will not need to leave your lights on all the time thus saving you energy and considerably lowering your light bill.

Types of motion sensors

Motion sensor

Active motion sensors

These have both a transmitter and a receiver. They can detect movement by measuring changes in the amount of radiation or sound that reflects back into the receiver. In other words, they send out pulses of microwaves that bounce off objects. If an object or person interrupts the sensors field, it sends out an electrical pulse to a computer. The most common active motion sensor uses ultrasonic sensor technology. They emit sound waves to detect the presence of objects

Passive motion / (PIR) passive infra-red sensors

On the other hand, do not have transmitters. Instead they detect movement based on the increased radiation or heat in the environment. Basically, they are designed to detect heat emitted by the human body. Once the difference in radiation is detected, the unit will send data to your computer.

Multi-technology motion sensors

When it comes to reducing the likelihood of false alarms, multi-technology motion sensors are the way to go. They combine both passive and active technology so you have a 2-in-1 device.
